Want to use something in your work, but not sure if it's in the public domain or noat? Here's an extremely handy table showing the various times and kinds of works and when they enter the public odmain (until Mickey Mouse comes up for being in the public domain-then they'll probably add another 120 years).

KDEnlive is a good and easy video editor for GNU/Linux
psychoses, scallawag, pirate
[info]cainmark
Finally! After many tries with different versions and kinds of video editors, I finally found a video editor in GNU/Linux that does pretty muich what I want the way I want it to. It's available in Ubuntu Gutsy repositories. I'm still on Fiesty so I had to add a source list to get the MLT framework.

http://www.kdenlive.org/

The weirdes thing to me is that GNU/Linux has a large collection of awesome applications for VJing, as in real time effects, but basic video editing with effects has taken so long to get here. Cinelerra can do a lot but the leraning curve is too steep for most users ?(was for me). Kino's great for capturing and basic short vlog stuff, but lack quite a bit in the diting side. KEDnlive has multiple timelins for video and audio. And is easy and as intuitive to use as the iMovie on the mac.

Now I have to wrench some time free to get back to my video editing hardcore and finish some things!

Thinking about alien fire
psychoses, scallawag, pirate
[info]cainmark
So after watching Dark Star http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Star_(film) again, I remembered a couple of things I’d read about Dan O’Bannon (Pinback) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_O'Bannon . This was from some magazines in the 80s, so probably Cinemagic or Fangoria http://www.fangoria.com/ . According to a professor of his, he was starving so much one time that he ate an entire pack of hot dogs from the professors refrigerator. Also, someone remembered he commented to them, “I’ve got a script that going to make me a fortune”. That script was Alien http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_(film) . He did well. I think I read this around the time he was making Return of the Living Dead http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Return_of_the_living_dead , the zombie movie that first specifically targeted brains as zombie food.

The other day as I remembered most of this I thought that the reason the first Alien movie worked so well was because it was basically a physical form of fire. Think about it. First there’s a small flame, and it doesn’t seem to be much of a threat, then it spreads and seems unable to control until you cut off oxygen to it.
