  • 16:52 Testing again for sleep apnea Thursday. Normal respitatory intteruptions are 3-5 times a night. Mine were 86 so likely I'll need cpap. #
  • 16:53 Hardy Heron works great with the "new" old BMW case computer I got yesterday. Figured it out and it was cheaper to buy that than build it. #

KDEnlive is a good and easy video editor for GNU/Linux

[info]cainmark
Finally! After many tries with different versions and kinds of video editors, I finally found a video editor in GNU/Linux that does pretty muich what I want the way I want it to. It's available in Ubuntu Gutsy repositories. I'm still on Fiesty so I had to add a source list to get the MLT framework.

http://www.kdenlive.org/

The weirdes thing to me is that GNU/Linux has a large collection of awesome applications for VJing, as in real time effects, but basic video editing with effects has taken so long to get here. Cinelerra can do a lot but the leraning curve is too steep for most users ?(was for me). Kino's great for capturing and basic short vlog stuff, but lack quite a bit in the diting side. KEDnlive has multiple timelins for video and audio. And is easy and as intuitive to use as the iMovie on the mac.

Now I have to wrench some time free to get back to my video editing hardcore and finish some things!

I really like this feed aggregator. I didn't like its predeccesor so much (democracy) because it didn't have mefeedia as a channel. Now it does.

Gwhere is a catalog manager for CDs and DVDs for GNU/Linux

I had the equivalent of this on WinXP. Glad I found a gui for this on Ubuntu debian GNU/Linux:

http://www.gwhere.org/home.php3

Now if I can only find that last CSV file I had from that old program I won't have to enter each and every cd and dvd again for logging.

The value of having a catalog of stuff offline on CD and DVD was and is invaluable for me. Originally it was because I had so little disk space, and now it's usefull for backups as well. But also because I made my Home partition way too small and have to free up space once in a while until I can find time to fix it.

One of the cool things about my using Ubuntu Debian GNU/Linux is the program "Beagle", which can find anything easily, but I like syncing my physical folders with my virtual ones, which is why I use the heirarchical Library of Congress system (LOC) modified for my own use. Here's a link to my version that I update as needed:

I'm glad I switched to ubuntu gnu/linux.

I'd tried Red Hat and Debian before, but they always had hardware issues. The only real hardware issue I have with Ubuntu is I can't get my ATI 9600 2006 edition video card tv-tuner working. I am going to switch to Nvidia graphics card and a hauppage pvr-150 as a birthday present to myself in June, and make a basic HTPC dvr with a larger hard drive. Which I can still use as my computer. Wowsers.

If you're really, really into pc games an don't want to go the console route, then Windows is pretty much it for you. But, damn, I would NOT downgrade to Vista. There are so many stories of people unable to play CDs they legally own because of the faulty DRM management. Plus, it's expensive, and it requires you to buy new hardware for it to function properly.

Macs, as of right now, really are the best for video editing, especially if you have final cut pro.

GNU/LINUX, I've found is super fast on the net, but that may be because my opera browser is configured for each specific computer platform. No virus worries. At all. And while I haven't set things up to be secure and anonymous surfing, the fact that I can thrills me to no end. And it works on older machines, which in computer terms, is anything older than two years. Which really is kind of silly if you think about it, as a computer has very few moving parts.

This is a pretty good article about switching to linux, inspired by a like article for people switching to Mac.

"Kino help
Try starting Kino as superuser:
Code:
sudo kino
If that doesn't work, try loading the raw1394 module first:
Code:
sudo modprobe raw1394
Then start Kino as superuser. It worked for me.
When you're done down/uploading video from your cam you can edit it using kino as a normal user.

I hope this helps.
Ciao.

Text-To-Speech
for Gnu/Linux systems

The way to listen to the sound generated by festival is
$ echo "Hello, world" | festival --tts
or
$ festival --tts hello.txt
where hello.txt is a file containing the text "Hello, world".

How do you record the output?

I've tried

$ echo "Hello, world" | festival --tts > hello.au
$ rec `echo "Hello, world" | festival --tts` hello.au

but it won't work.
